[ About KAMIZUMO ]

KMIZUMO (紙相撲, "paper wrestling") is a Japanese pastime or performance which consists of a SUMO match between puppets or with other favorite characters.  Details, please see Wikipedia (English) link.


[ Materials ]




[ Making SUMO Wrestler (1) ] 

  1. Have a paper (thickness as post card) of 10cm X 13cm and fold it to a half. 
  2. Draw your favorite character on one side. At that time draw right and left hand, one up and one down. 

3. Cut a bottom (orange color arrow points) to make some tilt.
4. Paint a charactor and cut the extra hand (pointed by orange arrow) so one side with right hand and another with left hand.


5. Here is some example of SUMO wrestler of your favorite characters.

You can make SUMO wrestler with ORIGAMI (i.e. Average size is 15cm square.  You can use 18 cm square also.)

[ Making SUMO Ring ] 

Once you have SUMO wrestler made, then you need a ring.

  1. Use paper box such as small pizza box or any other box will do.  
  2. Draw a circle with compass or use a round dish to have 20cm diameter circle.
  3. Place a bonding agent along a circle.
  4. After it is half dry, place a kite string over bonding agent placed on box to make circle.
  5. You can paint and decorate a SUMO tournament ring.  For example to have small circle on 4 corners where player hits by a finger.




[ How to Play ]

  1. Place your SUMO wrestler in a middle of ring.
  2. With a call for start ("HAKKE-YOI"), players will hit the corners with fingers.
  3. Player will win, when his/her SUMO wrestler push other wrestler our of circle or make opponent to fall down.
